PHOENIX, AZ (July 28, 2010) – Jim Ward, Republican candidate for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District, released the following statement today on Judge Susan Bolton’s ruling on Arizona SB1070:
“While we expect these rulings from activist judges, today’s decision is nonetheless a disappointment. I am confident Judge Bolton’s ruling will be successfully appealed.
"There should be no confusion surrounding SB1070. I find it ironic that based on an argument of preemption the Department of Justice is stopping the state of Arizona from doing the very job the federal government has itself abdicated. SB1070 is still a good law and I am confident that the important portions of the bill will ultimately be upheld. Most importantly, the law is still serving as a spotlight on the federal government’s complete failure to secure our country’s borders.
"Harry Mitchell, Janet Napolitano, and President Obama have done next to nothing to fulfill our government’s basic responsibility to secure the borders of our nation. Today’s court decision should refocus Arizona’s CD-5 voters on the need to replace Harry Mitchell with a Congressman who will take the necessary action to close our border to all illegal immigration.
"I firmly believe that a truly secure border must be a precursor to any other reforms in the immigration process.
"Past attempts at comprehensive immigration reform and border security reform have relied on granting amnesty to illegal aliens. This is no solution to the economic drain and criminal attacks that have adversely affected the state of Arizona. Amnesty is antithetical to solving our illegal immigration problems and only exacerbates this destructive trend. We need to effectively secure our borders now and enforce existing immigration law.”
